Dominica retreat

A Journey into Transformation and Teaching in Soufriere, Dominica:
200-Hour Teacher Training with Devon Schmidt and True Nature

Yoga is a journey toward spiritual, mental and physical wellness. It is union, unfolding within and all around. The timeless teachings of yoga have not only survived through the ages but also thrived in this modern era. Through yoga, we are inspired to live simply and compassionately, dedicated to realizing our potential.
Join Devon Schmidt, ERYT- 500 and True Nature, for this 18 day, 200-hr Teacher Training Immersion on the beautiful Caribbean island of Dominica! Dominica is known as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean’ and is the perfect environment to enhance your training experience with its lush vegetation, volcanoes, birds, animals, hot springs, beaches and more.
The Day Yoga Foundational Yoga Teacher Training is a holistic and experiential approach to Hatha Yoga. We will explore Power Vinyasa, Gentle and Yin Yoga with an additional focus on meditation and pranayama. The teachings will be expressed through 180 hours of contact hours in the class setting taking place in Dominica and 20+ home study, personal practice, practice teaching and karma yoga.

Teaching yoga is a natural extension of your experience of it, rather you intend to teach in a classroom setting or simply by affecting others through how you live in harmony in your own life. As you learn and experience, you will grow and inspire those around you to come along on the journey.

** This immersion also includes two full days off from training to allow time to rest, study or explore the island of Dominica in optional excursions.

** Upon successful completion of all training hours and requirements, trainees can register with Yoga Alliance as a RYT-200.

Devon Schmidt, ERYT- 500

It was in 2003 while enrolled at the CCAD, that Devon Schmidt first discovered her love for yoga.  Through Hatha yoga classes at the YMCA in downtown Columbus, Ohio, she came to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of the asanas and noticed how wonderful she felt after class.  It was while learning about yoga’s spiritual side that Devon was  inspired to become a yoga teacher.

In 2010 Devon completed the World Peace Yoga 200hr Teacher Training Program in Springboro Ohio. In 2016 Devon also completed the 300hr Advanced Teacher Training Program at Yoga On High and is registered with Yoga Alliance as an ERYT-500.  She has completed the Shanti Mom Prenatal Yoga and Color Me Kids Trainings, as well as Yoga Therapy and Yoga Nidra Level I.  Along the way she has been fortunate to study with David Swenson, Doug Keller, Richard Freeman, Karina Mirsky, and many more inspiring teachers.  She completed Ayurvedic and Thai Yoga Massage Trainings with Kelly Lewis and Annette Dennis respectively. She has also completed an Ayurvedic Health Counselor program through Shakti School with Katie Silcox.

In 2011 Devon opened Day Yoga Studio in Dayton, Ohio to provide yoga and wellness services to the community.  Along with teaching open yoga classes, she also facilitates workshops, conducts private individual yoga sessions, directs the 200-hour and 500-hour RYS teacher training programs at Day Yoga, and offers Ayurvedic Massage and Reiki sessions. A second location in Beavercreek was opened in 2018.

Devon teaches many various yoga styles and loves to incorporate the more spiritual aspects of yoga into her classes, encouraging her students to delve into self-inquiry and staying present through pranayama.  She is also the director of the Day Yoga Community Outreach program which brings yoga to those in need in and around the Dayton area including schools and women’s shelters. All the while Devon still finds time for her most important job: being a mom to four kids.

Things To Know

This Hatha Yoga based training will cover three main styles in this training: vinyasa, gentle and yin yoga. This makes our training well rounded and those that complete the program will feel confident teaching all three styles in different environments such as studios, gyms, private yoga sessions, corporate yoga and more.

This training is designed for those that want to teach yoga and also for those that simply want to learn more about yoga and deepen their practice. You don’t have to plan to teach to take the program!

You don’t need to be at a certain “level” with your yoga practice or have any extensive prior knowledge to take this training. Our teachers in training come from a variety of backgrounds with different levels of yoga experience. Many of our teachers in training have successfully completed the program with a variety of physical or mobility limitations. We will discuss all the ways to modify yoga practices for ourselves and our students alike. We will start with the basics as we build the foundation of yoga lifestyle, philosophy, ethics, practice, methodology, anatomy and more. The training will progress over the 18 day time frame giving you all the resources and tools you need as you continue.

Training includes the minimum of 180 contact hours on site in Dominica towards 200hr RYT certification through Day Yoga School and Yoga Alliance. There are additional personal practice, practice teaching, readings and homework required outside of the minimum contact hours to complete the program and to receive certification. These additional non-contact hours help to fulfill the required 200hrs and also will give you more practice, experience and knowledge to become a qualified yoga teacher. You have three months after the training ends to complete the requirements without incurring an additional charge. After three months there is a $25 monthly late fee.

A training binder that also serves as our manual will be included in the tuition cost. All other required books must be purchased separately and many can be found at Amazon or on Kindle used or new at reasonable prices.
