Time to Unplug. This retreat will consist of a 7-day exploration that will encourage you to deeply examine the story you are telling yourself, about yourself. Are you one of those people who are overconsuming, overworking, and not fully expressing themselves? What is that inner voice saying? Oftentimes we are only telling half of our truth. So many of us are suffering behind closed doors. Anxiety and depression are becoming more common while stress is festering at our health. We must create healthier habits with how we utilize technology, computers, and screens.
Social media is becoming the main source of information but are you fact-checking what you’re reading? Are you inspired or distracted? Are you expressing your truth or living a false reality? It’s important to be real and share “the highs and the lows” because transparency is how we liberate ourselves.
We invite you to remove yourself from the digital world and come back to self-discovery. In the lush jungles and other serene environments of Costa Rica, we will reclaim our power. How do we do this? First, own your truth. When you live in truth and authenticity, no one can take away your power.
During your stay, you are invited to attend daily yoga and meditation sessions in the morning and evening. Workshops that incorporate writing exercises, art, and sound therapy to inspire your creativity. Interested in telling your story via speech, video, or photography? We will provide many tools and resources you need to express yourself.
As you tap into your creative nature, you will have an opportunity to visualize and manifest a new reality. This will be a fun and invigorating moment in time with like-minded individuals. Excursions are optional for those who are seeking more adventure.

Breath as A Radical Act
Activating change and healing in the world!
Ghylian Bell, founder and director of The Urban Yoga Foundation (UYF), is on a mission to shift the consciousness of the world, one breath at a time using the breath as a radical act! Whether through community engagement or corporate partnerships she has the intention to slow down the fast-paced, frenetic energy that has so many people unable to focus and find joy.
Ghylian created new programs that are truly the emotional, psychological and spiritual amalgamation of all she had gathered energetically on her path of life. Her introduction to the practices of mediation and yoga at age 19, came through the noted Jamaican singer/songwriter Bunny Wailer of the groundbreaking The Wailers featuring Bob Marley. That moment changed her and charged her forward. She began her walk and her work to build a bridge of spiritual practices in all her endeavors.
Ghylian continued her yoga journey in New York practicing the Asthanga tradition [a modern day form of classical Indian yoga] in 1994 with Eddie Stern at Yoga Shambala. She received certification while moving on to ISTHA (Integrative Science Of Tantra Hatha and Ayurveda) with Allan Finger. She also trained with Maju Jois, son of Patabbi Jois, who developed and popularised Asthanga yoga. When introduced to the teaching methods of Tao Porch Lynch, one of the world’s oldest yoga teachers and ancient Egyptian Kemetic yoga teacher Yiser Ra Hotep, Ghylian deepened her practice even more. With her focus now on fusing the indigenous practices of Kemetic Hatha and Tao lineages, Ghylian knew that she needed to bring this wealth of knowledge forward to the communities she serves, so that healing and wholeness could become available to more people.
“My work is through education and healing trauma. I work to reclaim these indigenous practices and part of my teaching comes from my story. The importance of remembering the story of who we are is how we tap into the energy within. I learn, I teach, I share and hope to activate that seed of consciousness in the work I do for others.”
In November 2007, Ghylian founded UYF, a 501c3 non-profit to create yoga and mindfulness programs that specifically target the needs of students of color. The foundation also proposed to create a platform for teachers of color to serve in their community as guides. UYF serves all who are seeking a path to wellness. In communities of privilege, UYF utilizes the service-based principles of yoga to increase social awareness and promote collective work and responsibility in our partnerships. UYF is a national organization that partners with and creates outreach programs available for schools, organizations, studios and corporations. UYF’s Integrative health and mindfulness programs, yoga classes, meditations, professional development workshops and teacher training were created for yoga teachers, therapists, nurses, parents, caregivers, social workers and all who intend to teach in urban or highly stressed areas. In 2019, Urban Yoga (™) expanded with a for profit component, which supports the foundation by its teachings with The People’s Practice (™). The People’s Practice is an integration of Kemetic and Hatha with Tao healing arts. These ancient methods employ breath, sound and movement to still the mind and liberate the body, based on the foundations of four part breath, geometric progression and the remembrance of your indigenous nature within. The People’s Practice (™) develops attention to individual needs, while encouraging the support of a holistic community.
Ghylian and UYF have piloted programs in schools throughout the New York metropolitan area, and to this day have reached over 500,000 individuals. “I feel like we are in a time, with the pandemic around the globe, with unrest in so many places and with so many people seeking, where a shift, a new shift is occurring. We have been connected before, consciously, and I feel like we are there again, different people speaking different languages, but finding a common intention.” Ghylian has also done individual practice with celebrated icons who have worked with her to stay centered and grounded in the rigorous and righteous realms in which they operate. She works with R&B/jazz musician, producer, recording artist and radio personality James Mtume and has worked with the late, great legend Ms. Cicely Tyson. Ghylian partnered with Beverly Bond, founder of Black Girls Rock to cultivate mindfulness practices to youth from all over the world held at Barnard College. Ghylians work with Columbia University School of Social Justice provided practices for social workers , front line workers and people formerly incarcerated. Her work expanded to The Citi College of New York, Hostos College and Fordham University who is the community school partner for the Dept of Education in New York. Ghylian has and still develops curriculum, training and retreats.

We cannot emphasize more the importance of travel insurance. As we all know, especially as travelers, “life happens.” Whether it’s family, work, mother nature, or a change of heart, it is important to be prepared in case you need to unexpectedly change your travel plans. Often for less than $150, you can purchase a travel insurance policy and be protected in the event that you need to make a change or need to be covered financially prior to or during your trip.
We have partnered with two insurance companies: Trawick International and CSA Travel Insurance (available for U.S. Residents only). For Non-U.S. Residents this policy with Trawick insurance is available: Safe Travels Multi-National.
We encourage you to research the insurance company and policy that best meets your needs.
