Escape Winter with Rachel in Costa Rica

Letter from Rachel:

Hi there! Costa Rica is one of my favorite places in the world, I’ve been there more than eight times! I am so excited to be leading this awesome yoga retreat on the beautiful Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in Playa Uvita. Uvita is such a special place, right at the top of the Osa, where the jungle and the ocean are so close to one another. When I was there last, I kept expecting to see a dinosaur walk across the open field!

In addition to the breathtaking beaches, beautiful scenery, serene vibes, and magical forests, Costa Rica is also known for the people – super friendly, and with an intense love for the Earth, including at our eco-hotel. The staff does an exceptional job of showcasing the natural beauty of the area, while also allowing guests to feel safe and cared for. The gourmet chef-prepared meals at the onsite restaurant are fresh, local, and delicious.

From the panoramic views to the natural swimming pools, and sandy private beaches, you can enjoy the impressive sunsets and tranquil ocean breeze that make this retreat an absolute must! For those that love the sun, and need to take a break from the harsh winter months, this will be a perfect opportunity.

Exploring Costa Rica

There really is no “typical day” in Costa Rica, except to say that everything is laid back and easy, Pura Vida style. That said, each day will include: Morning yoga/meditation, breakfast, lunch, lounge time, afternoon/evening yoga/meditation, and dinner. Other activities throughout the day might include: a trip into town for a fresh coconut to drink, surfing, stand up paddle-boarding, lounging on the beach, drinking a beer in the hammock, bird watching for parrots, listening to the sounds of the jungle, zip-lining, and basking in the bright, glorious sun!

About Me (Rachel)

I have been teaching yoga for 12 years, and have led 10 retreats in that time, both domestically in the US, and to Costa Rica. It has been so beautiful to witness on all of my retreats how people make fast and long lasting friendships.

For yoga, we will be practicing a vinyasa flow style, along with some restorative classes. Depending on people’s interests, we can also do a few workshop style classes throughout the week. I will also be offering meditation where you will connect with yourself, others, and nature more deeply than you ever have before. Costa Rica is a magical place which will leave you feeling really refreshed and inspired.

  • 6 nights accommodations (1 night at airport hotel and 5 nights at retreat center)
  • 3 meals per day starting with dinner on the first night and ending with breakfast on the last day
  • Guided on-site Eco Tour
  • Group Ground Transportation to/from SJO Airport to Retreat Center
  • Beach access every day
  • Daily yoga practices
  • Personal retreat time (having time to nap, explore, walk, read, and just be)

Beautiful, eco-friendly accommodations situated amidst acres of lush gardens, hiking trails, and a secluded jungle trail leading to Playa Uvita, a beautiful beach (only a 15-minute walk away). The atmosphere of the retreat center is simple, healthy, and relaxed. Rooms are single or double occupancy. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are prepared daily and include healthy vegetarian options along with fish and/or chicken. The food is organic when available and prepared with nourishing ingredients.

Gorgeous bungalow-style accommodations all with huge ocean views, where you can see Ballena National Marine Park, the rainforest, and much more. All of the rooms are made from reforested wood from our trees planted on the same land 20 years ago. The architecture includes local craftsmanship using wood, stone, shell, and sand.

*The group will be staying at an airport hotel on the first night of the retreat.

Rachel VerValin:

I have been fascinated by nature, natural cycles, astrology, yoga, and the healing arts my whole life. I’m a yoga teacher and energy healer originally from  Ithaca, New York that has lived all over the country, and I even spent 5 months living/working in Costa Rica! I currently live in Louisville KY with my partner and all of our animals. I’ve been practicing yoga for 20 years, and teaching for 12, including leading many national and international retreats, yoga teacher trainings, and workshops.

I semi-jokingly refer to myself as a “recovering type A personality” – before I began practicing yoga, I found my mind racing all of the time, thinking about how to be the best at everything. I grew up as a super overachiever, and it was really nice to come to yoga class and, over time, let the racing mind drop into the background. I started being nicer to people, and to myself. I let herself be vulnerable, and be okay with that. Yoga helps me to understand and recognize that we are all just humans, trying to get by – and we need love and kindness to make that easier.

On my yoga retreats, and in my classes, I seek to create a nurturing environment where students can learn and practice in a caring and accessible way. My classes are often filled with funny quips, laughter, hard work, and great music. I (immensely!) enjoy creating a space where EVERYONE can feel comfortable. I want to empower you through connection – to yourself, to your community, to your family, to your friends, to your life. As Brene Brown says “connection is why we are here.”

“I never would have dreamed when I signed up that it would have such an impact on me and my life – and I think the long term effects are still to come!” – Jennifer

“This retreat will change your life. It is the perfect combination of yoga, meditation, and fun. Rachel is awesome – she teaches for all levels. The activities are great, but you don’t have to do them if you want to spend the day at the beach or getting a massage. I give this retreat an A+” – Nicole

“Taking a yoga class with Rachel is a magical experience. You will feel a mind, body and spiritual connection almost instantly just by coming into her classroom. Her flows are transformational – both her fast paced, and restorative style classes. You will feel fulfilled and want to go back as soon as you leave her class!” – Kelly

While on your retreat you will also have the opportunity to take part in adventure activities and wonderful excursions. Some of the possible options include:

  • Zip-lining
  • Horseback Riding
  • Surfing
