Deepen your Ashtanga Yoga practice in the French countryside near Bordeaux. This retreat is perfect for those with an existing practice or those who have never done Ashtanga and want to begin to develop a practice. We’ll offer both led and Mysore-style classes.

If you already have a practice, you can enjoy it at your own pace through our daily Mysore-style and traditionally counted classes. You may choose to have hands-on assists or just enjoy your practice on your own. We respect all styles. All we ask is that you keep an open mind and a playful spirit!

If you are new to Ashtanga, we’ll teach you about the Mysore-style method, taking it slowly and customizing it to your own individual needs. You’ll learn gradually throughout the week, building slowly and with intention. The led classes will complement the Mysore-style by allowing you to see how the practice comes together. Modifications will be offered.

Ashtanga is a breathing and movement system designed to purify the body and mind. It was devised by Guruji Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and was derived from the teachings of his guru Krishnamacharya. It comes from Mysore, India where it’s still taught today by Guruji’s grandson Sharath Jois. Ashtanga is a set sequence of postures, starting with the primary series, followed by intermediate and third series (or Advanced A). The difference between Ashtanga and other styles of yoga is that Ashtanga is taught as an open practice where students memorize the asanas. There are also led classes where the breath and postures are called out as you would experience in a typical vinyasa class. Led classes help ensure the practitioner’s breath count, gaze and asanas are aligned.

Since Ashtanga offers a custom approach to yoga, it’s meant for all — beginner and advanced, young and old, sick and healthy. Most importantly, practice regularly and with gratitude.

Joy Is My Armor teaches in the tradition of Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor, which is a mindful and joyful practice with an emphasis on the internal form.

This retreat center is a charming 17th-century country estate in Southwest France. It’s meticulously maintained residence and park are the essence of stillness and seclusion. The grounds include a heated swimming pool, hard-surface tennis court and 100 acres of protected woodlands.

Castles, medieval villages and historical sites dot the surrounding countryside. The region also offers many outdoor activities, world-famous vineyards, restaurants, and music. The weather could not be more ideal: from the end of April until the end of October the area averages less than five days of rain per month. Temperatures range from 18-29 degrees Celsius.

Sara is the owner of Joy Is My Armor Ashtanga Yoga in Hoboken, NJ, and is a dedicated teacher of Ashtanga yoga and meditation. With nearly 20 years of practical Ashtanga Yoga experience, Sara is an advanced level practitioner and serious student of yoga in the tradition of Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. Sara believes that Ashtanga is an inward-looking journey of self-discovery that is supported by community, consistency, kindness, and cultivating a practice that starts from within and blooms outwards. Sara is also certified in Level 1 Reiki. This is her second international yoga retreat.

“I started practicing Ashtanga Yoga with Joy is My Armor when I moved to Hoboken. At that point, I had been practicing on and off for about 5 years and dealing with various injuries that had me thinking about quitting Ashtanga. Sara made me fall in love with the practice again! Through her teaching and guidance I was able to establish a routine that served my needs, strengthened my body and ultimately helped me recover from a knee surgery I couldn’t avoid. Needless to say, I found a teacher for life!

The yoga retreat in Crete was absolutely amazing, the perfect balance of physical practice, relaxation, and warm interactions. Nothing beats a sunset meditation with a view of the Mediterranean Sea! One of the best vacations I ever had! I am looking forward to the next one!” — Yota

“Sara is beyond knowledgeable. She’s intuitive and makes you feel safe and comfortable. She is a teacher for practitioners at any level so that both experts and novices are able to benefit from the experience.

Her previous retreat in Crete offered quality accommodations, excellent location and amenities. Food was top tier serving local cuisine. Her yoga was taught in a non-pushy or judgmental setting with camaraderie encouraged, and the opportunity to practice at a high level every day (or to take the day off if you wanted.)” — Trevor
