Relish seven days and nights along the tranquil shores of Lake Atitlan, “the place where the rainbow gets its colors,” in the highlands of Guatemala. Join Amberly and Nerissa on this physical and spiritual yoga retreat for a week of asana practice, introspection, and relaxation.

Energize your body with the opportunity to take part in multiple daily yoga classes of different styles. We will be offering daily Vinyasa classes as well as the chance to practice more relaxing styles such as Yin and Restorative Yoga. You’ll even have the chance to practice Kundalini to energize not only your body but also to help you align and awaken your chakras. With opportunities throughout the week to strengthen and awaken your vitality in the mornings, there will be time to relax and recharge in the evenings. We’ll spend the week balancing the body’s Sun and Moon energies through yoga, meditation, and adventure to leave you in harmony with nature and in tune with the frequencies of your heart.

Spend your days doing as much or as little as you like, all while enjoying homemade vegetarian meals and immersing yourself in the culture of the Maya in “the land of eternal spring.” Included in your tuition are an authentic Maya Shaman ceremony and a volunteer opportunity to give back to the local community with a Karma yoga service project. Reconnect with Mother Nature with opportunities for kayaking, hiking, visiting local villages, or a simple morning walk. Want to take it a bit easier? Spend the day relaxing by the pool. Feel the need to be pampered? A full-service spa and sauna are available to nourish tired muscles after long adventurous days.

Set the intention to put down your phone, step away from the computer, and discover a community of new friends and a stronger, more balanced version of yourself.

Meet Your Leaders

Nerissa and Amberly are friends and yoga studio partners, who want to offer students a comprehensive yoga practice and retreat. They are two sides of a coin, one yin and the other yang, so they can provide an individualized practice based on each student’s needs. Nerissa offers a more challenging, strenuous practice to get you out of your comfort zone. Transformation and growth are never comfortable. Amberly offers a more relaxed and nurturing practice to help you reset. Together, they are bound together like the sun and moon, and their aim is to help you find more balance and harmony in your life.

Nerissa’s Skanda and Vinyasa classes are like a shocking blast of cold water in the shower. There’s no hiding. She instantly recognizes your strength and potential even if you can’t. Out of her love for her students, she demands that you believe in yourself and that you make the effort. She believes in everyone’s inner magic and beauty but knows that making excuses won’t help you become your fullest self.

She is the innate Yang to my Yin. She gets more done in a single day than I do in a week, and it’s her drive that propels everyone around her. She wants to relish in the beauty of this world, but she’s also seen the negativity and hardships that shape each of us. She won’t let you hide from the world. She wants you to face your fears and emerge stronger and more powerful on the other side. I love her classes because I feel just that at the end of savasana. When I feel sluggish and stuck, she’s just the teacher I want to wake me up.

If you’ve been looking for a more challenging yoga practice but are unsure about where to begin you should try Nerissa’s classes. Her background in the Ashtanga and Vinyasa lineages will make you feel safe getting upside down and putting your feet behind your head. But she’ll challenge you mentally as well. She has a strong background in meditation and the myths of yoga. Her Dharma talks always keep you connected to the ways in which yoga is applicable to the world today.
She is a true friend and partner, and I feel lucky to travel my yogic path alongside her. She’ll ask you to try new things, some of which may be difficult, but she asks because she knows you’re stronger than you think.

~Amberly F.

From the moment Amberly walked into my studio I liked her. After taking her first class with me, she just looked at me and said, “That was the HARDEST intro to Vinyasa class I’ve ever taken.” I just laughed and was like, “Yeah, exactly. That’s why I need you to teach for me.” That was it. We’ve been friends ever since and now we’re business partners. Amberly is everything I’m not. She’s slow to make a decision. She’s thoughtful. She has the voice of an angel and she has a beautiful practice that is nothing like my own. She really is the Yin to my Yang and I am forever grateful to have found her. She lets me vent when I need to and helps balance me out in a way that no one else can. Somehow even though we are completely different, we get along beautifully, and in fact really seem to understand one another. Although I don’t take her classes as often as I probably should I always leave feeling lighter, more relaxed and more capable walking the path. She helps me chill out, slow down, breathe, and in today’s world that is a real asset. If you need to take some time for yourself and get back in touch with your spirit then I can’t recommend a better teacher. She not only teaches yoga but she lives it. She believes in it and you can see how much her students and her practice mean to her. So, if you’re thinking of going on this retreat, and you’re not sure, because you’ve never done anything like this before, then take a leap of faith, because she will make you feel so welcome, warm, secure and relaxed you’ll be asking yourself, “What took so long? Why am I just doing this now?”

Amberly Fox, E-RYT 200, RYT 500

Amberly is a Louisville, KY-based teacher, who creates a calm refuge in her classes for students to flow deeper and more thoughtfully. She incorporates proper alignment and breath in creative ways for a stronger, more balanced practice within a safe and nurturing space.

She has studied and practiced yoga for many years but decided to transition into teaching in 2012 and has completed studies in Hatha, Yin, Restorative, Kundalini, Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga, and Reiki. She trained in Yin Yoga with Bernie Clark in Vancouver, BC and went on to complete her 300hr training in Vancouver at Semperviva Yoga School. Her teaching style incorporates the gentle and nurturing aspects of Hatha and Reiki healing as well as strong breath work to build internal heat and help bring balance back to the body. Her Kundalini classes aim to get the body moving so the mind can relax, while her Restorative classes provide a sanctuary for maximum comfort and rest.

Her own practice over the years provided the crucial space to reconnect to herself and others in a judgment-free zone. That healing, peace, and connection to the oneness of all living things is what she now hopes to offer others.

Nerissa Sparkman

Nerissa is a Louisville, Kentucky based yoga teacher and studio owner who knows first hand the power of yoga. Almost 20 years ago, suffering from insomnia and depression, she walked into her first yoga class hoping for guidance and relief, and since that day she has never looked back. Practicing yoga regularly while traveling and living around the world throughout her 20’s and into her 30’s she suddenly found herself back stateside six years ago. She felt something special was happening when she walked into a class in Miami taught by Skanda Yoga Creator, Anand K F Von Roenn III, one of her first teachers in Louisville all those years ago. After years of dedicated, regular practice she was being called to teach, and Skanda Yoga was her path. With yoga’s increase in popularity and teacher trainings around every corner, she believed that teaching from the perspective of a long time student was not only important for the tradition but also essential. It was time to take her practice to the next level and teach.

With a background in dance and a love for all things physical, yoga has always been her place of comfort. The combination of strength and flexibility required to practice yoga in both body and spirit are what has brought her to her mat year after year, decade after decade. Yoga has always been her anchor when the world has felt chaotic. It’s always been her place of peace.

In her classes, you will be challenged. You’ll be asked to face your fears, and you’ll sometimes be uncomfortable. But you’ll always be supported and loved. Nerissa more than anything believes in the spirit of her students. She believes in laughing and never taking yourself too seriously and always facing your fears head-on. She will take the time to break-it-down and teach you arm balances and inversions that other teachers often just skim over during a flow. She’ll also give you time in class to work on new poses, no matter if you’re an advanced practitioner or if you’re starting from the beginning; you will be challenged to grow.

If you want to learn arm balances and inversions in a safe setting then Nerissa and Skanda Yoga is just what you’re looking for in a yoga retreat. You’ll walk out of her classes feeling like you really got a chance to challenge your own boundaries. You’ll also build confidence and hopefully have a little more pep in your step. The rewards of yoga are easy to witness and Nerissa’s classes are no exception. Are her classes relaxing? Only in the way that when something is difficult it requires all of our attention, and so we can move out of our head and into our bodies and we feel relaxed and accomplished when we’re finished. Because let’s admit it, quieting the mind is the hardest challenge we face. Believing in ourselves and our dreams takes dedication and practice, and for yogis that all starts on the mat.

I have taken Amberly’s Yin Yoga and Candlelight Yoga classes and have learned so much! The attention to correct posture for poses and thorough explanations of how to achieve each movement are combined with why the movement will help to provide an opening of a specific area and the benefits of that opening. Amberly is a gentle teacher as she inspires us to push for more in our practice, She takes care in preparing the space for us and setting a mindful experience for every student. I would highly recommend her classes; they are wonderful!

~Amberly’s peaceful and beautiful demeanor may cause her creative and challenging flow classes to catch a yogi off guard. Her restorative classes are a sweet retreat from all of the work we put our bodies through. Did I mention she’s all around body positive? Take a class with her. You will be glad you did.
~Valerie M.

I started yoga a little over a year ago with Nerissa. Prior to her classes, I had only done basic yoga through a college course. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I went in knowing I had flexibility and figured I’d be good. Nerissa opened my eyes that you needed flexibility AND strength. Starting her classes, I couldn’t even do a push-up. It’s amazing to see how far I’ve come in just a year by building, not only physical strength but also confidence as well. Nerissa is an amazing teacher because she actually cares. She wants you to learn things the correct way. She wants you to do things outside your comfort zone, and she wants you to have fun while doing it. I can 100% say I’ve grown as a person from taking her classes. They are something I look forward to each week because of the sweat session, the feeling of belonging somewhere, and the peace of mind that you get after each class.

~Devin E.

Nerissa is a great instructor for those hoping to deepen and challenge their practice. She pushes you to places you never thought you could go while incorporating great mediation practices every day. Practicing with her and Sadhana Yoga has greatly improved my physical and spiritual practice.
