Hello! My name is Pamela Nelson. I am a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher at the Junior Intermediate II Level. I live in Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan on a small acreage with my family.
I completed my degree in Land Use and Environmental Studies and Physical Geography from the University of Saskatchewan at around the same time I started yoga and found that yoga helped me keep a deep connection to the earth and keep focused on the health of the earth and how amazing it is in the many ways it provides for us and teaches us. I started in my early 20’s, and my intention at that time was to use yoga as a way to increase flexibility after long runs or bike rides. I quickly realized how beneficial it was to not only my strength and flexibility but also my mental well-being. I love the openness yoga brings to the body and the quietness it brings to the mind. I have found it helps with confidence and personal self-acceptance.
Since those early years, I have become a member of the Iyengar Association of Canada (IYAC) and certified at the national level. I have practiced yoga for over 24 years and taught for over 13, training exclusively in the Iyengar system. I have completed the rigorous and lengthy training program receiving my Introductory II certificate in 2010. Since then I have achieved my Intermediate Junior I and II Certification and am intending to proceed to the next level in 2019. I stay current by regularly attending Iyengar yoga classes, workshops, and intensives held by senior international IY teachers, including traveling to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family in 2013 and 2018.
I teach all level of classes including Beginner, All-levels, Intermediate, Iyengar Flow, Gentle/Restorative, Backs and Joints, Senior/Modified and Youth and Kids. I love teaching yoga in a way that is accessible to all and to continue In the Light of Guruji’s work.
Style of Yoga
The Iyengar approach to yoga is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga expounded by Patanjali in his classic treatise, The Yoga Sutras, written over 2,500 years go. It is a disciplined and deeply research system developed over 75 years by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar who practiced daily for many hours at a time during his 96 years – exploring, studying, writing and teaching about yoga.
Yoga means union. The union of the individual soul with the Universal Spirit is yoga. But this is too abstract a notion to be easily understood, so for our level of understanding I say that yoga is the union of body with the mind and of mind with the soul”. – BKS Iyengar, Tree of Yoga.
What is unique about Iyengar Yoga is that it is characterized in the practice of asana (poses) and pranayama (breathwork) with the innovative approach emphasizing precision and alignment, planned sequencing, timing and the use of props. This approach has allowed people of varying ages, levels of health and fitness to enjoy the benefits which a sustained practice can bring – the ability to face the physical, mental and emotional challenges contemporary life with strength, vitality, mobility, thoughtfulness and equanimity. The term “Iyengar Yoga” was coined by students of Mr. Iyengar to distinguish Guruji’s approach from other styles of yoga.

My yoga journey began in 2003 while I was in university and I think it was love at first sight. It was then that I started attending Vinyasa classes and I was hooked from the very first class. It didn’t take long to know I was experiencing physical benefits: increased strength, flexibility and balance and in the beginning, it was that physical stuff that kept me coming back. I knew as well, there was something else happening but was unable to explain or even put my thumb on. I later came to know it as my personal rhythm and it is the awareness of that mysterious rhythm that makes me a lifer.
I completed my university and moved to Elk Ridge to start my grownup life and career as a high school teacher in Prince Albert, knowing yoga would be forever woven into the fabric. In 2009, along with my mom, we deepened our yoga practice through a 300 hour yoga teacher training program. It was a life changing experience that made our close relationship even closer.
Most recently I have embarked upon the study of iRest Yoga Nidra, expanding my understanding and my personal experience of the benefits of meditation and mindfulness. This was particularly timely as I personally reaped the benefits during the birth of my second son. This is yet another step in my journey in this adventure of being a human! There is so much to learn, know and experience. I know I will never know it all, but I have a lifetime to study. I consider myself as much or more a student as an instructor, constantly exploring and taking in new things. Every day and every stage of life brings new challenges and lessons and my practice continues to evolve as my life as wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, student, and explorer unfolds.
When I am not practicing or teaching yoga and meditation, you can find me chasing after and playing with my 5 year old and 3 year old boys and 1 year old girl. I love creating things, whether it be trying a new recipe, painting or weaving, or digging in the dirt. I try to see beauty in the mundane, everyday things and spend a little time each day thinking about and being grateful for this miracle of being alive.
Style of Yoga

More generally, it is a wonderful practice for processing the stress of daily life building resilience and self-awareness.
What to expect from this method of yoga?
Roxanne has a unique style of teaching that incorporates many styles of yoga. She is constantly learning from different teachers and trying new and different ways of moving the body. Having a basis in alignment has allowed her to experiment and know when to follow the rules and when to break the rules, if there really are any rules in yoga! Her main focus in teaching asana is the really feel the body and all its layers. Her classes are challenging for all levels, but more importantly intuitive and playful.
