Join Hugh Byrne and Rebecca Hines on the gorgeous Greek Island of Amorgos. This is a time to connect with true joy in the beauty of the soothing blue Aegean Sea nourishing your body, mind, and spirit with practice, community, and adventure.
For the first half of the week, we will explore the arising of joy as we come into stillness through traditional mindfulness practices – sitting meditation, movement, walking – and enjoying locally-sourced organic meals. Our mornings will begin with meditation and movement overlooking the Aegean Sea with seamless practice throughout the day to support coming home to your true nature.
The second half of the week will be spent exploring the island’s historic towns, relaxing on the beach, hiking the coastline, and doing whatever feeds your soul. Most evenings will be spent with a group dinner to share our day and enjoy each other’s company.
Our retreats are shaped by our intention to immerse ourselves in the culture of where we are and to be open to the adventures that present themselves. This week will offer a balance of practice, rest, and play. We have discovered through leading and attending many retreats that traveling together and saying yes to life and its moment-to-moment opportunities creates a true connection with joy, lasting friendships, and a gratitude for life’s abundance.

Hugh has practiced meditation for thirty years and has taught mindfulness meditation since 2000. He is a senior teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and teaches classes, retreats, and workshops in the U.S. and internationally.
As a teacher and social activist, Hugh works to align the inner life with the outer—applying the wisdom and compassion of Buddhist teachings to the social, political, economic, and environmental concerns of our time. He helps lead trainings in Jordan for refugee aid workers in the Middle East and teaches meditation in the U.S. Congress, in non-profit organizations, and workplace and community settings.
Hugh was born and raised in London, England. He is trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Somatic Experiencing, a mind-body approach to healing trauma. He has a law degree from London University and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
Rebecca is deeply devoted to meditation, movement, and applied mindfulness. She enjoys the challenge of creating continuity of awareness from ‘on the mat’ to ‘off the mat’ in everyday life – and being a support to others in the endeavor to live an awakened life. She first discovered these practices through yoga in her early twenties, which provided tremendous support when she was facing acute anxiety. After benefitting from the gift of yoga over a number of years, her practice evolved to include meditation and mindfulness. Rebecca enjoys sharing her love of the many practices that bring us back home into presence.
Rebecca is an affiliate teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and also has worked in the field of public health within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) since 1993. She appreciates the joys and challenges of creating work-life balance, aligning the inner and the outer, and ultimately, coming to experience trust in oneself and life. Based on her journey, Rebecca’s passion is creating and holding space for this exploration of ‘dancing with life.’
She participated in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) professional training program in 2006 and has been teaching the eight-week MBSR course in the Washington DC area for 11 years. As a life-long learner, she continues to deepen her study and practice of mindfulness, meditation, and movement graduating from Spirit Rock’s Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training Program; the Spirit Rock Heavenly Messengers – Awakening Through Illness, Aging, and Death Program; the Meditation Teacher Training Institute; and the Kripalu 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training program.
