Changing Your Story
Umbria, Italy Retreat with Elizabeth Israel

My “story” seems to change in small and big ways whenever I have the opportunity to travel!  Growing up traveling with family, traveling with partners, and traveling around the world by myself, I’ve done it all. I think that a yoga retreat to a different country is a lovely way to expand our minds and get in touch with what our bodies are capable of doing! It’s a wonderful way to get out of our comfort zones, visit new places, meet new people, explore doing yoga daily, eat delicious food and learn about different cultures. Having been to Italy many many years ago, I look forward to going back to this beautiful country with such a rich history!

We all have our own story and we like to stay attached to that story. When we’re attached to our story, we are resistant to change, therefore resistant to moving forward. During this retreat, we’ll look at ways we can work toward changing our story by taking an inward look at our samskaras. Samskaras are the subtle mental impressions left by all thoughts, intentions, and actions that are experienced by an individual. Often compared to grooves in the mind, samskaras are psychological or emotional imprints that can lead to behavioral patterns. These behavioral patterns can be either positive or negative. On retreat, we’ll use meditation, movement, breath-work, and journaling to explore our habitual samskaras. These samskaras are holding us back from becoming whom we want to become.

As we come to this retreat in the beautiful Italian countryside, we’ll begin the mornings with meditation and movement. Start your day with a gentle flowing hatha or vinyasa style yoga class, a kundalini kriya, or a VinYin practice. Then in the late afternoon/early evening, we’ll do a more calming and grounding Yin/Restorative practice with breath-work. All classes will be available to all levels of yoga practitioners. Additionally, there will be plenty of time for exploring the beautiful area, cooking classes, hanging by the pool, wine tasting, enjoying the onsite Spa, and anything else you wish to do!

Elizabeth Israel

Born and raised in Nebraska (the Heartland), where yoga was slow to arrive, Elizabeth started doing yoga with videos. Wanting to deepen her understanding of yoga in order to help her massage clients with the benefits of yoga, she started out small with a weekend teaching course, moved on to a 200-hour hatha/vinyasa course, and then decided she had a love of Kundalini so went to Bali to get her 200-hour KRI certification. She is now E-RYT 200, YACEP, and RYT 500, has taught over 1600 studio hours, and hosted and participated in several international retreats, including Bali, India, and Jamaica, in addition to many local workshops and day retreats.

Elizabeth’s class style is playful, nonjudgemental, infused with humor, modifications, optional challenges, and a big heart full of love and understanding. Her goal in being a yoga teacher and a student is to embrace the benefits of yoga, live it to the best of her ability, and share in the struggle with others, allowing each person to understand that yoga, and life is a journey! Elizabeth has a deep love of travel. Having grown up in the Midwest, she was fortunate to have a family that enjoyed travel and was able to travel the USA extensively and into Canada and Mexico. She took her travels overseas for a year as an exchange student in Sweden and then a year of teaching English in Hungary. Since then she has traveled to more than 20+ other countries, the most recent being India and Bali for yoga teaching and learning opportunities. This love of travel, meeting new people, and experiencing yoga around the world has inspired her to offer this experience of a yoga retreat to Italy.  Elizabeth views being a yoga student and a teacher as a beautiful never-ending journey. She is so excited to be able to offer this retreat for all students on their yoga journeys. Elizabeth owns and operates Avani Day Spa and Yoga Studio in Hastings, Nebraska.
