italy yoga retreat

After two years of compounded tumult and uncertainty, many of us feel overstimulated and undernourished, anxious and drained, all qualities that shape our nervous systems and the pathways through which we take in and transmit the experiences of Life. And, as a consequence, shapes our presence in the world. Sensing into the holy ground of our being, our week will be a tranquil pilgrimage to 5 Sacred Altars within, tracing the maps, both subtle and gross, given to us through the sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda. This will be a week of restoration and recalibration on every level, honoring the senses, the subtle, and the sublime power of our direct experience of life.

In the great traditions of Yoga and Ayurveda, health is known as swastha, which really means to be established in the true self. To be at home and grounded in who we really are, wherever we are. As humans (“prani,” beings of prana, or life force/intelligence), we are composed of the primordial powers of the cosmos, but we so rarely sense into or feel that as truth. Either we embody and transmit the highest frequencies of these forces as love, stability, radiance, clarity, vitality, and peace, or we experience them as rage, addiction, anxiety, overwhelm, or depression. Each of us decodes and translates reality through our senses, and then we project ourselves back into the world. These pathways are thus recognized as powerful entry points for healing into who and what we are here to be; out of our drama and into our dharma, our place in supporting the good of all the cosmos.

This is a pilgrimage. Though often we think of a voyage into an unknown or foreign territory, this is really a journey of the self to the Self, which transforms limitations into possibilities, forever shifting the paradigm and landscape through which we understand and experience who we are and how we bring that into our daily lives. As T.S. Eliot wrote, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

Over the course of our week, daily practices will introduce and establish each of the 5 altars—sites for conscious focus and meditation, to reveal and reclaim what has always been sacred. Drawing upon many styles and traditions, practices will focus more on personal experience than a particular method. Together, we will share yogic practices of kriya, asana, chanting, mudra, pranayama, meditation, and deep relaxation. Morning sessions will awaken more dynamic movement to clear the subtle pathways, while our pre-dinner sessions will cultivate more stillness and spaciousness. A few optional gatherings for discussion, writing prompts, and self study will complement our formal practices. This is not a retreat about posing and posturing as something “other,” but rather accessing and radiating the presence and power you are.

Together, amidst the splendor of this beautiful landscape, we shall travel these inner pathways and discover (or recover) the sacred sites of consciousness (Altars) within. Join Jessica C. Patterson, founder of Root: Center for Yoga & Sacred Studies for this nurturing 6-night retreat in beautiful Tuscany, exploring and reclaiming pathways into the sacred, whole, and holy space within us all.

Jessica Patterson

Jessica has been practicing and discovering yoga since 1993, during which time she has had the great privilege of exploring many methods, approaches, and teachers, including her most formative teachers, Indu Arora, Mark Whitwell, Sharon Gannon, David Life, Manorama, and Shanti Shanti Kaur Khalsa. She is a 500-hour Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance and a Certified Yoga Therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She is the founder and director of the 7-month, 230-hour RootEd Apprenticeship & Teacher Training Program and the year-long UN-training program, devoted to the teachings of embodied activism. In 2014, Jessica opened Root: Center for Yoga and Sacred Studies, a Colorado Springs-based sanctuary that serves as a home for her public classes, training programs, workshops, Sadhaka Sessions (intensive learning modules for those who seek deeper study outside of “teacher” trainings), 1:1 sessions, and more. Jessica has been offering retreats for over 15 years in diverse locations (Colorado, Mexico, Hawaii, New Mexico, Northern Iceland), integrating thought-provoking, meaningful themes. In addition to her public offerings at Root, Jessica loves to work with individuals one-on-one through Yoga Therapy, Nutrition Therapy, Mentoring, and Off the Mat sessions. Whether teaching public classes or intensive offerings and retreats, Jessica is committed to sharing Yoga as an empowering technology relevant to our modern lives. Making it “real” is what it’s all about. To that end, her teaching style is empowering and powerful, warm and accessible, grounded in all the teachings and traditions that have framed her own direct experiences. Jessica recognizes that we are all first and foremost students, and the goal is to awaken to that innate intimacy with the intelligence of life—not to mimic or memorize, pose or posture.

Over the years, Jessica has taught nationally and internationally, serving as faculty and guest teacher for many teacher-training programs across the country. As full faculty for Inner Jessica PattersonPeace Yoga Therapy, she delights in supporting budding Yoga Therapists who are pursuing the specialized training the school offers.

With an M.A. in English and as a former college instructor, her writing projects offer touching and personal explorations of how yogic teachings can help ordinary, everyday people navigate life’s ups and downs (from divorces and deaths to financial uncertainty and health diagnoses). Her forthcoming book and other essays come directly from her own experience as a student (and teacher) of yoga for well over two decades.

Jessica believes that the ultimate purpose of yoga is to remember and embody who and what we really are and to recognize that as whole and holy. Missing nothing. The goal of her teaching is to help students feel free from limiting thoughts and patterns. Jessica’s dedication to and respect for all these practices have enabled her to infuse her teaching with deeply spiritual, physically dynamic, and truly uplifting classes that seek to empower each individual.

“A retreat with Jessica is an extraordinary experience. Her physical practices and teachings are at once challenging and nourishing, taking you into your body in a way that builds your trust and knowledge of your Self through your practice. But she brings so much more than the on-the-mat practice, delving into the deeper teachings of the original texts and connecting them to other wisdom traditions, philosophies, and our daily lives. You will come away wiser, stronger, and more resilient.”  — Megan W.

“As a teacher and storyteller, Jessica weaves together her wisdom in a beautiful and accessible way. She knows who she is, and, as such, her students are empowered to find their true Selves.” — Michele L.

“I was searching for my yoga “home” when a teacher suggested that I try a class with Jessica. Although I did not know I was in for something quite different from the typical western yoga experience, I immediately felt at ease and in my element. Jessica is very gifted at creating a welcoming, safe, and spiritually fulfilling environment in every interaction she has, within class and without. She brings a sense of reverence, but also a sense of humor, to her teachings. I highly recommend her classes and retreats to anyone who is seeking deeper personal and spiritual development.” — Michael K.

“Jessica’s retreats have been invaluable.  She helped me develop a daily practice that has made me a better person.  Jessica’s seemingly effortless lessons translate age old yogic thought to make sense to us as we navigate the challenges of this 21st century life.  I founded an international supply chain business in 2017.  Incorporating yogic principles not only into my daily life, but also into the office, allowed me to weather the storm of COVID in good stead.  Clearing my mind and focusing on only my breath for those treasured moments each morning, paved the way for me to become a better boss and helped me find the self confidence required to establish my own business.   I am forever grateful to Jessica and her teachings.” — WHL
