Style of Yoga

Yoga means union. The union of the individual soul with the Universal Spirit is yoga. But this is too abstract a notion to be easily understood, so for our level of understanding I say that yoga is the union of body with the mind and of mind with the soul”.

Iyengar yoga is a transformative practice using the body as capitol for the mind.  The method is derived from the personal practice of BKS Iyengar who spent 80 years using his body to find and create the harmony with his mind. Tapas is self liberation through the act of will and the practice of yoga allows us to discover how we live in our bodies and therefore the world.

The practice of yoga is non-discriminatory, stiff, flexible, young, mature,  in the practice of Iyengar Yoga, everyone is welcome, necessary and of value.

BKS Iyengar approach has given many the ability to face the physical, mental and emotional challenges of contemporary life with strength, vitality, mobility, thoughtfulness and equanimity.

The term “Iyengar Yoga” was coined by students of Mr. Iyengar to distinguish Guruji’s approach from other styles of yoga, health, and fitness to enjoy the benefits which a sustained practice can bring – the ability to face the physical, mental and emotional challenges contemporary life with strength, vitality, mobility, thoughtfulness and equanimity.

Sample Itinerary

Every retreat is unique and, as such, the itineraries are ever-changing! We finalize the itineraries about 3-6 weeks before the retreat, but after 10 years of hosting retreats, we do have a general idea of what most schedules look like.

Most retreats include one-to-two daily yoga classes. One class takes place in the morning, either just before or just after breakfast. After the first class and meal, you have free time to explore, relax, or take part in optional add-on activities. Lunch (if included in your retreat) will take place midday, during this free time. There is then, usually, an afternoon class followed by dinner. Occasionally some teachers choose to offer an evening restorative class or group gathering after dinner as well.

In addition, there is usually one dedicated “excursion day” in which we do not have scheduled yoga classes. This is a day for people to take advantage of some of the more involved tour and excursion offerings and is always a lot of fun!

Accommodations

The retreat center’s name translates as “love from the ancient forest.” It is nestled in an oasis of native plants and fruit trees, nourished by a magnificent waterfall in the Sacred Valley of Peru. This lovely spot is in the Andes Mountains and home of the twelve mountains known as Apus—“luminous beings.” Those who come to the center have the opportunity to commune directly with these mountains, as well as with the local curanderos and pacos (healers), who engage with us for ritual and Despacho ceremony.

The guests at this center enjoy delicious meals with locally-grown and lovingly-prepared ingredients. Each guest room is a reflection of the Peruvian culture of the Sacred Valley. The entire center embodies kindness, love, and wholeness that seem to permeate the magical place.

Pamela Nelson

Hello! My name is Pamela Nelson.  I am a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher at the Junior Intermediate II Level.  I live in Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan on a small acreage with my family. This is my second international yoga retreat with True Nature Travels and I am so excited to be heading to Peru!

I completed my degree in Land Use and Environmental Studies and Physical Geography from the University of Saskatchewan at around the same time I started yoga and found that yoga helped me keep a deep connection to the earth and keep focused on the health of the earth and how amazing it is in the many ways it provides for us and teaches us. I started in my early 20’s, and my intention at that time was to use yoga as a way to increase flexibility after long runs or bike rides.  I quickly realized how beneficial it was to not only my strength and flexibility, but also my mental well-being.  I love the openness yoga brings to the body and the quietness to the mind.  I have found it helps with confidence and personal self-acceptance.   

Since those early years I have become a member of the Iyengar Association of Canada (IYAC) and certified at the national level.  I have practiced yoga for over 25 years and taught for over 14, training exclusively in the Iyengar system. I have completed the rigorous and lengthy training program receiving my Introductory II certificate in 2010. Since then I have achieved my Intermediate Junior I and II Certification and am intending to proceed to the next level in 2019.  I stay current by regularly attending Iyengar yoga classes, workshops and intensives held by senior international IY teachers, including travelling to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family in 2013 and 2018.

I teach all level of classes including Beginner, All-levels, Intermediate, Iyengar Flow, Gentle/Restorative, Backs and Joints, Senior/Modified and Youth and Kids.  I love teaching yoga in a way that is accessible to all and to continue In the Light of Guruji’s work.

Kara Thorsen

Scoliosis brought the gift of curiosity to me about the inner workings of my body and the corresponding mental patterns. In my case correct boundaries in my youth had not been established, as a result, improper defence mechanisms were installed.  I spent years reprogramming my response to life and from this practice came – Meet the Resistance. 

It has been my experience that when we remain present for the acts of life we gain an insight to our moment of growth and we are able to institute a state of equanimity. I am an Iyengar practitioner and teacher.

The journey will begin with a drive through the Sacred Valley, passing through several fascinating towns, villages, and sacred sites in the valley. Arriving in Ollantaytambo, a small townPeru Yoga Retreats that still maintains its Inca architecture and offers the opportunity to visit and explore the majestic archaeological site, which overlooks the route to Machu Picchu.

Take a beautiful train ride from “Olla” along the river to the town of Aguas Calientes. Spend the night in Aguas Calientes, enjoying the quaint town along the river. Arrive in Machu Picchu the next day before sunrise to witness the illumination of the sacred ruins. Experience an unforgettable day at Machu Picchu, exploring the sacred Incan “City of Light,” learning about the sacred ruins and taking moments to sit, breathe, and experience the powerful energy of one of the most sacred sites on the planet. After the tour, you will spend a final night in Cusco and take a shuttle to the airport the following day.

Getting There

You will be booking your flights for the Cusco Airport (CUZ). Most flights will arrive via a connection in Lima. Before booking tickets, please be sure you have received your official confirmation note that the retreat has met its minimums. There will be one group airport shuttle each way based on our flight window guidelines. Be sure your flights align with the provided flight windows if you wish to use the group shuttle.
