Iyengar Retreat in Italy

Set in Umbria — often called the “green heart of Italy” — this retreat unfolds among rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards, and medieval hill towns. Quieter and less traveled than neighboring Tuscany, Umbria offers an atmosphere of authenticity and timelessness. The rhythm of daily life slows here, inviting deeper presence, meaningful connection, and spaciousness.

Co-led by Kathleen Swanson and Cindy Berliner, this retreat offers an immersive exploration of classical Iyengar Yoga. Morning practices will focus on foundational asana — cultivating strength, stability, and clarity through precise alignment and intelligent sequencing. Afternoon sessions will include restorative poses and pranayama.
Beyond the yoga hall, participants will enjoy nourishing Umbrian cuisine, time to rest, and opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside and historic hill towns. This week is an invitation to step out of daily momentum and into a more spacious rhythm — one where practice, landscape, and community come together in a deeply restorative and inspiring way.

Kathleen Swanson, CIYT Level 3, C-IAYT

Kathleen Swanson is a Level 3 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) who has been devoted to the study and practice of Iyengar Yoga since her first group class in 1993. Growing up with parents who studied the method (and still practice in their 80s), she was introduced to yoga at a young age. In her early twenties, following reconstructive surgery for congenital knee issues, she returned to the practice with renewed commitment, studying with senior teachers who helped her adapt yoga as a means of recovery and long-term resilience. What began as rehabilitation became a lifelong path.
Kathleen continues to study weekly with senior Iyengar teachers to refine both her practice and her teaching. Her work is rooted in precision, intelligent sequencing, and deep respect for individual anatomy.
Her teaching encourages enthusiasm, steadiness, and self-compassion. Drawing from her own experience navigating injury, she is especially attentive to students with limitations and offers thoughtful modifications for common knee, back, and shoulder concerns. Students value her clarity, warmth, and ability to create a grounded, supportive learning environment where growth feels both safe and empowering.

Cindy Berliner, CIYT Level 3, C-IAYT

Cindy Berliner is a Level 3 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) and Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) who has devoted herself to the study and teaching of Iyengar Yoga since 1998. After working as an Assistant Attorney General in Boston, Massachusetts, she chose to pursue yoga full-time, bringing intellectual rigor and disciplined inquiry to her path of study.
Cindy has been teaching group classes, mentoring teachers, and working privately with students since 2006. From 2011–2019, she owned and operated Inner Stream Yoga in Freeport, Maine, cultivating a deeply committed yoga community.
She considers herself, first and foremost, a lifelong student of yoga. Cindy studies weekly with senior Iyengar teachers and travels regularly to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. Her teaching blends technical precision with philosophical depth, inviting students to explore yoga as both a physical discipline and a path of inquiry.
Together, Kathleen and Cindy offer a retreat experience grounded in decades of study, personal practice, and thoughtful leadership — creating a space where discipline and warmth, rigor and ease, come into balance.

Testimonials

“This retreat was everything I hoped it would be. As someone who usually attends virtual classes, the opportunity to receive personal feedback and ask individual questions about posture and technique was incredibly valuable. Having two highly knowledgeable and friendly teachers meant we received real, attentive support throughout the week. They are a wonderful team — their different approaches truly complement one another, and having one teach while the other assists benefits everyone in the room.”

“The quality of instruction on this retreat was exceptional — truly a 10 out of 10. The teachers are deeply experienced Iyengar practitioners who give so generously of their time, counsel, and knowledge. Their personalities and life experience infuse the teaching with warmth and authenticity, while still offering precise, challenging instruction.”
